None of us should be surprised when a politician pulls a stunt to try and prove to her constituents that she’s doing something. Senator Elizabeth Warren is extremely skilled on this front, leveraging social media and early wins in her career to convince people that she is an effective legislator. About a month ago, she launched a campaign to basically call out what the Trump administration is doing, and today, hosted a “hearing” (which Schumer later called a “spotlight”) called “Stealing the American Dream: How Trump and Republicans Are Raising Education Costs for Families.” While I agree with a bunch of the broad strokes of Warren’s statements - the admin has illegally fired federal employees, DOGE’s actions are misguided and ineffective, budget cuts are bad for borrowers, all of this will have a negative impact on the economy - I am consistently disappointed with Democrats’ extremely ineffective policymaking (especially on higher ed) over the last decade and the focus being more on press releases than implementing effective reforms.
